Welcome Back

Is it a comeback?  I don't know, but I do have a desire to start posting again.  I'm making a few changes to my routine and am hoping that the outcome(s) will be positive.

I bought myself some half-decent walking shoes, a cheap messenger bag, traded in some rewards points for new earbuds for my ancient mp3 player and signed up for my office's commuter check program; all for the purpose of getting my 43 year-old ass in gear so that I may maintain it's current state of "high and tight"ness.

I gotta tell ya; I'm lovin' this bus/walking thing!  So great to get out of that damn car for a change.  Mind you, I lurves my car - 10 minutes across town and free parking - but I am Mr. Road Rage.   Taking Muni is opening a whole new world to me.  In fact today, I skipped the 33 entirely and walked all the way from Bryant and 16th to 18th and Castro!  Tom was flabbergasted!  It was really something, taking in the sights and smell of the Mission, all the while pumping Kurt Elling, Ann Hampton Callaway and Lalah Hathaway into my music-starved ears.

I brought my camera and on the way to work and took a few pictures.  I've decided that I'm going to take at least one picture per commute and post it here.  Today's shot is of the building I have been working in for the last two and a half years.  The Hamm's Building once housed part of the massive Hamm's Brewery complex, and is purportedly the tallest building South of Market.

Happy Birthday, Dad! Wherever you are.

Burton Eugene Staffen, born November 11, 1929, would have been 80 years old today. I wanted to do something to remember him by. Although at the moment, I don't have the time to do him justice, I at least wanted there to be something out there in the ether (i.e., the internet) that carried his name. The obituaries that I used to find by Googling his name are, unfortunately, no longer in existence.

I was recently contacted on Facebook by another Staffen who, like my Dad, hails from Michigan. He was wondering if we might be related. We wrote back and forth and I composed the following for him. It's not much, but it's the best I could do on short notice. Should you wish to fill in the missing details, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.

Burton Eugene Staffen was born on November 11, 1929 in Greenville, MI, King County, to Allen Staffen - a Free Methodist Minister - and Linda (Kassner) Staffen. I think he was the second youngest of eight children. Brothers and sisters whose name I recall are Arnold (Arnie), Robert (Bob), Marsha, Louie and...and...boy, I can't remember. The eldest son, Deforest (sp) died at the age of twelve after falling through thin ice while crossing a frozen pond.

I know he served in the Korean War and was a Chaplain's Assistant. He did 4 years at the University of Michigan and fell just short of earning his masters degree in music.

Music and photography were his passions. While living in New York, he attended the New York Institute of Photography.

On December 1, 1962 at the age of 33, Burt married my mother, Sheila "Patti" Patsy Fuller in Los Angeles, California. Eleven months later, my sister Traci was born. I came along in 1966. In 1968, The Staffen family moved to the L.A. suburb of Thousand Oaks, where my brother Jarrod was born in 1969.

Having joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the Mormons) shortly after meeting Patti, Burt enjoyed serving in a number of capacities that were provided him. He was a beloved church choir director and was best known for the numerous, heartwarming Christmas programs he conducted.

Burt was very well known and loved in the international SPEBSQSA community, having sung with, directed and been coach to, several Barbershop quartets and choruses, eventually winning the 1996 Seniors International Champions with his quartet, "A Little Fatherly Advice".

My Mom, Patti, and her Sweet Adelines quartet, The Shalimars, won internationals in 1965 (and are still known as one of the best!).

Patti and Burt also sang with the Southern California Mormon Choir. Their time with the choir took them to places such as Sydney, Egypt, Israel and Mexico.

In 1989, the Staffen family moved to Redmond, Washington, where Burt and Patti later retired, giving them the opportunity to continue their travels.

After a courageous, five year battle with metastatic colon cancer, Burt passed away on July 9, 2009.

--------

I love you, Dad.

Why should I care?

So. The California Supreme Court Voted 6-1 in favor of upholding Proposition 8. That's what everyone expected, and that's exactly what they did. What about the 18,000 couples that got married? Yes, they said that Tom and I (me?) can stay married.

We're still married. So what? Who gives a flying f@#$? Why should I even care? How can I be happy, when the issue is closed for the rest of my LGBTQ family?

Shut out. Second class. Sub-human? That's what 52% of the Californians who deigned to show up at the voting booth last November said.

Am I, with my husband and our Certificate of Marriage, suddenly no longer second class because the California Supreme Court grandfathered us in? I would rather give up this piece of paper and the promises it holds and continue the fight for equal rights, unmarried and in love, alongside my beloved queer family, until all of us have equal protection under the law.

Golden Girls (condoms, condoms, condoms!)

In loving memory of Bea Arthur, and, because the same thing happened to me when I bought my first box of condoms.

Well, not EXACTLY the same thing, but the checker at Safeway did have to get a price check on my 24 count box of Trojans.

Oh, to be 22 again!

Warning Label

Great idea, don't you think?

So true, so true.

And, thanks to the litiginous society in which we now reside, almost everything comes with it's own warning label.

I think this blog needs one. How about this:
